In the wake of the recent car-bomb incident near Delhi’s Red Fort, the Ahmedabad City Police Commissionerate has issued strict orders for all garages, workshops and service stations to maintain detailed vehicle records and install CCTV cameras. The directive, issued on November 17 by Police Commissioner G.S. Malik under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code, 2023, will remain in force from November 18, 2025 to January 16, 2026.
The order covers the entire jurisdiction of the Ahmedabad Police Commissionerate and aims to curb the rising trend of crimes involving stolen two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Police note that offenders often abandon such vehicles or take them to local garages for repairs or modifications, but lack of customer documentation hampers investigations.
Under the new rules, all garage and service station owners must maintain a mandatory register listing the vehicle number, make and model, owner’s name, address, mobile number, ID proof, purpose of visit and details of the person dropping off or collecting the vehicle. Copies of ID proof and registration documents must be retained and shown to police on demand.
CCTV cameras at entry and exit points are now compulsory, with footage to be stored for at least 30 days. Police officers of Head Constable rank and above are authorised to take action against garages that violate the order, which could lead to legal proceedings.
