The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Saturday demolished 16 commercial structures encroaching on the road line between Chhadawad Chowki and Ambawadi Market.
The long-pending action, carried out by the Estate Department using JCB machines, followed the resolution of a 17-year-old court case.
The road, currently 18 metres wide, is being expanded to 30 metres as part of the city’s Revised Development Plan (RDP).Officials said one more structure will be removed once ongoing legal proceedings are completed.
According to Mahesh Tabiyar, deputy estate officer of AMC’s West Zone, repeated notices had been issued to the shop owners since 2007–08 for encroaching in front of Rudra Complex. “The demolition was delayed due to court cases, but similar action was earlier taken against nine other shops once disputes were resolved,” he said.
The widening project is expected to ease traffic flow and improve connectivity between Ambawadi and Bhudarpura.
