In a historic move celebrating India’s first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup triumph, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has declared a monumental cash prize of ₹51 crore for the victorious squad. The announcement was made by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, marking a milestone moment for women’s cricket in the country.
After years of heartbreak in the 2005 and 2017 finals, Team India finally lifted the ICC Women’s World Cup trophy by defeating South Africa in a thrilling contest — securing their maiden world title across both ODI and T20I formats.
Speaking to ANI, Saikia lauded the team’s achievement, saying, “In 1983, Kapil Dev inspired a generation by leading India to a World Cup win. Today, Harmanpreet Kaur and her team have done the same for women’s cricket. They have not just brought home the trophy but have also captured the hearts of millions. Their victory will inspire countless young girls to take up the sport.”
He further credited BCCI Secretary Jay Shah for transformative steps in women’s cricket since 2019, including pay parity and a substantial increase in prize money. “Under Jay Shah’s leadership, women’s cricket has progressed immensely. Last month, ICC Chairman Jay Shah announced a 300% hike in women’s prize money—from $2.88 million to $14 million. The BCCI’s reward of ₹51 crore will be distributed among players, coaches, and support staff,” Saikia added.
