Unseasonal Rains Ravage Over 10 Lakh Hectares of Farmland in Gujarat

Unseasonal rainfall has caused widespread damage to standing crops across Gujarat, leaving farmers in distress. Preliminary government estimates indicate that over 10 lakh hectares of farmland have been affected by waterlogging and flooding.

Crops such as sugarcane, soybean, pigeon pea (tuar), groundnut, and horticultural produce have suffered major losses, with Saurashtra emerging as the worst-hit region. Districts like Junagadh, Bhavnagar, and Amreli have reported heavy damage to groundnut and cotton crops. In South Gujarat, paddy and betel leaf plantations have been impacted, while North Gujarat has also seen significant crop losses.

The state government has directed officials to complete loss assessments within seven days. Cabinet ministers have been deployed to the affected regions, and their reports were reviewed in a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. A detailed crop loss survey—combining physical inspections and technology-based methods—is now underway.

Officials in Gandhinagar are closely monitoring the situation through real-time updates. Once the survey is complete, the government will prepare a comprehensive relief package to support the affected farmers.
