A major global outage on Monday caused widespread disruptions across several major online platforms, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon.com, Prime Video, Alexa, Snapchat, Robinhood, Perplexity, and Venmo, according to outage tracker Downdetector.
AWS Outage Triggers Global Disruptions Early reports suggested that the outage originated from Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the world’s largest cloud computing providers. The issue affected multiple regions, leaving users unable to access key services.
Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas confirmed that Amazon’s cloud infrastructure was to blame, writing on X (formerly Twitter): “Perplexity is down right now. The root cause is an AWS issue. We’re working on resolving it.”
Amazon Confirms Issues in US-EAST-1 Region
Amazon later acknowledged that AWS was facing “increased error rates and latencies” in its US-EAST-1 region, one of its largest data centers. The company said engineers were working to restore normal operations but did not specify when services would fully resume. At the peak of the outage — around 1:04 PM IST — more than 15,000 Amazon users in the U.S. reported issues. Of these, 50% faced problems with the mobile app, 29% with the home page, and 21% with the shopping cart.
Ripple Effect Across Platforms
Downdetector also reported that Prime Video, Alexa, and Venmo (PayPal’s payment service) were hit by similar outages. Snapchat users were among the worst affected, with over 22,000 reports logged around 1:10 PM IST — 58% citing app failures, 38% server connection issues, and 3% website access problems.
The outage once again underscored the global reliance on AWS infrastructure, where even a single technical fault can disrupt multiple digital services worldwide.
