Gujarat Congress on Thursday claimed that a recent change in the format of students’ names in official academic documents could create serious issues for JEE aspirants from the state.
The Gujarat Education Department recently adopted a new naming convention — name–father’s name–surname — for all official records. However, the JEE registration portal requires candidates to enter their surname first, leading to potential mismatches and registration errors.
Party spokesperson Manish Doshi said, “The BJP government’s decision will leave thousands of students unable to register for the 2026 JEE exam. The state must act immediately to correct this discrepancy.”
Doshi added that several students have already faced difficulties uploading their documents on the JEE portal due to the name format issue.
The JEE Main exam is the national-level test for admission to premier engineering institutes such as IITs and NITs. In 2025, over 1 lakh students from Gujarat registered for the exam, with around 95,000 appearing in the second phase. Congress said this number could decline this year and announced plans to submit a written representation to the Chief Minister seeking an urgent resolution.
