A municipal school in Surat has come under fire after a “chicken party” was reportedly organised during an alumni gathering. The event took place at Pandit Dindayal Upadhyay Primary School in Godadara, run by the Surat Municipal Primary Education Committee.
The incident has sparked controversy among parents, teachers, and local political groups, raising questions about oversight and permissions for events held on school premises.
The alumni meet of the 1987–1991 batch was held on Sunday at School No. 342, where non-vegetarian dishes were allegedly served. Videos from the event went viral, intensifying the backlash. Sources said the gathering was organised without formal approval, though the in-charge principal, Prabhakar Eligiti, and other staff were present.
Education Committee Chairman Rajendra Kapadia said he was unaware of the event and has ordered an inquiry. “Schools are not permitted to host food events, let alone a ‘chicken party,’” he said, promising strict action after investigation.
Non-vegetarian food is banned even in municipal community halls in Surat, making the incident particularly sensitive. The Surat Congress also condemned the event, calling it inappropriate and demanding disciplinary action against those involved.
