Dhanteras 2025: What to Buy and What to Avoid for Good Fortune

Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the beginning of the Diwali celebrations and holds great significance in Hindu tradition. According to mythology, it was on this day that Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, emerged from the ocean during the churning of the Milky Sea. Hence, devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera, the god of wealth, on this auspicious occasion. However, as per Drik Panchang, Lakshmi Puja on Amavasya, two days later, is considered even more significant.

This year, Dhanteras will be celebrated on October 18, 2025 (Saturday).

Kartik Krishna Trayodashi Tithi begins at 12:18 PM on October 18 and ends at 1:51 PM on October 19 (Sunday).

The shubh muhurat for Dhanteras is from 12:18 PM on October 18 to 1:00 PM on October 19.

On this day, people perform rituals and make purchases believed to bring prosperity. While some items are considered auspicious to buy, others are best avoided.

Things You Should Buy on Dhanteras

Gold and Silver: Purchasing gold or silver jewellery or coins is believed to invite prosperity and wealth.

Utensils: Buying new brass or copper utensils signifies abundance and good fortune in the household.

Appliances: Many choose to buy new home appliances or gadgets to enhance comfort and convenience.

Broom: Even a simple purchase like a broom is believed to sweep away financial troubles and negative energy.

Things You Should Avoid Buying on Dhanteras

Oil: Buying oil is considered inauspicious on this day.

Plastic Items: Avoid purchasing plastic products, as they are believed to attract bad luck.

Black Clothes: The colour black is associated with negativity and should be avoided.

Shoes: Footwear represents Shani (Saturn), and buying it is believed to invite misfortune.

Glassware: Glass items are linked to Rahu and are therefore considered inauspicious purchases on Dhanteras.

By following these traditional beliefs and rituals, devotees hope to welcome wealth, happiness, and positive energy into their homes this festive season.
