Even as India Post embraces digital banking, online money transfers, and e-commerce services, Gujarat continues to preserve over 22,000 of its iconic red letter boxes.
According to the Department of Posts, the Gujarat Circle has 22,171 letter boxes — 4,042 in urban areas and 18,129 in rural regions — while Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu add another 152, taking the total to 22,323 as of March 31, 2024.
Officials from the Ahmedabad Post Office said more than 1,000 red letter boxes remain operational across the division. Despite India Post’s growing focus on logistics and digital banking, the traditional boxes still receive handwritten letters, official documents, and greeting cards daily.
“Many rural families still depend on post offices for savings and pension schemes, while letter boxes in cities continue to serve official correspondence,” said an official from the Gujarat Postal Circle.
India Post has transformed through the India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), enabling digital transactions and doorstep financial services. Postmen across Gujarat now use handheld devices to help villagers access online services, while post offices have become vital hubs for e-commerce deliveries.
Still, the red letter box endures as a symbol of trust and nostalgia. “Even as we go digital, the red letter box will never lose its place,” said a senior postal officer.
