The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has reduced penalties for non-FASTag users who pay tolls via UPI. From November 15, they will be charged 1.25 times the toll fee instead of double.
For example, if the toll is ₹100, non-FASTag users will now pay ₹125 instead of ₹200. However, those paying in cash will continue to be charged double.
In cases where a vehicle has a valid FASTag but the system fails to detect it, motorists will be allowed to pass without payment—making operators more accountable.
FASTag adoption already stands at 98%, with wait times at toll plazas reduced to 47 seconds in 2022. The government is further promoting digital tolling through the FASTag Annual Pass, costing ₹3,000 for 200 trips, which can now be ported to a new tag if damaged.
