In Jamnagar, a girl’s hair was cut by her school sports teacher at Swaminarayan Gurukul School on Tuesday morning as punishment for not applying hair oil. Following the incident, the teacher was dismissed.
The student’s parents filed a complaint with the District Education Officer, prompting the Education Department to take action.
The school, which has faced controversies before, has once again come under scrutiny for its disciplinary practices. The student’s mother, Anjaliben Gandha, condemned such punishments, saying, “Children are often punished in school for trivial matters. Even forgetting a book can lead to 100 sit-ups. Our children fear going to school.”
A similar case was reported at Navanagar Government High School, where a teacher allegedly cut a student’s hair under similar circumstances.
Shashiben Das, Director of Education at Swaminarayan Gurukul, confirmed the dismissal, explaining that the school does not allow long hair and warns parents if rules are not followed—but in this case, the physical education teacher acted improperly.
District Education Officer Vipul Mehta said complaints from two Jamnagar schools were received on the same day, and measures have been issued to prevent such incidents in other schools. The Education Department has issued show-cause notices and launched inquiries against both teachers.
