The Subhash Bridge Regional Transport Office (RTO) will soon roll out a new vehicle registration series, GJ-1A-AA, as the existing GJ-01 double-alphabet series nears its limit.
Currently, the format includes the state code (GJ), RTO code (01), and a two-letter alphabetic series. With available combinations almost exhausted, the RTO sought approval from the Transport Commissioner earlier this month, following which the new three-letter series was allotted.
Subhash Bridge RTO Nirav Bakshi said the current system still has capacity for about 2 lakh registrations, but a fresh series was requested in advance. “The GJ-01 double alphabet series is nearing completion, so we had requested a new series. We have now received the GJ-1A series, but it will take some time to implement,” he said.
The office registers around 5,000 two-wheelers and 2,500 four-wheelers each month.
However, transport experts have flagged concerns. Former Joint Director of the Transport Department, J.N. Barewadia, said remembering a three-letter code like GJ-1A-AA could be difficult for citizens and may cause errors in cases such as accidents or legal disputes. He suggested introducing a new numerical RTO code instead to make identification easier.
