Gujarat HC sets 45 years as minimum age for senior advocate title

The Gujarat High Court has framed new rules for designating senior advocates, fixing the minimum age at 45 and requiring at least 20 years of legal practice.

Under the Gujarat High Court (Senior Advocates Designation) Rules, 2025, candidates must also mentor two to three junior lawyers (with less than three years’ experience) and show professional competence, specialised knowledge, and recognition in the field.

They are further expected to contribute to pro bono programmes and uphold integrity and good standing.

Restrictions: Senior advocates will not be allowed to handle routine case mentions or seek adjournments, as the designation is meant to signify distinction rather than procedural roles.

Selection process:

A permanent Secretariat, under the Chief Justice, will manage the process annually.

Applications must be endorsed by two senior advocates (with 10+ years at the bar) and include judgments from the last five years.

For outstation lawyers, inputs may be sought from judicial officers.

The Full Court’s decision—unanimous or by majority—will be final.

Rejected applicants may reapply only after two years.

The Full Court can revoke the title in cases of misconduct.

Eligibility conditions: Candidates must not have convictions, contempt findings, or disciplinary action on record.

The rules came into effect immediately, sparking debate in the legal community.
