The Gujarat government has officially granted municipality status to Becharaji, also known as Bahucharaji, a prominent pilgrimage town in Mehsana district.
According to a notification issued under the Gujarat Municipalities Act, 1963, the Bechar–Bahucharaji Municipality has been constituted with effect from 17 September 2025. However, government land within its limits will remain outside the municipal jurisdiction.
In October 2023, the state had already formed a special Becharaji Area Development Authority to oversee planned growth in view of the region’s religious and economic significance.
The government said the move aligns with its broader commitment to systematic urban development, supported by schemes such as the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana (SJMMSVY).
