With Navratri and Diwali approaching, Gujarat Police has issued a public advisory cautioning citizens against a surge in online scams. Cases of cyber fraud rise by nearly 60% during the festive months, police data shows.Fraudsters lure victims with fake discounts, free gifts, and reward links circulated through WhatsApp, SMS, emails, and social media. Clicking these links or making online payments on fraudulent sites often leads to compromised bank accounts or undelivered goods.In 2023, online cheating cases jumped 54%, and in 2024 by 66%. Experts warn that international fraud networks run over 100 scam models, with fake shopping websites mimicking top brands multiplying up to 200 times during festivals. Electronics, jewellery, home décor, ornaments, chaniya-cholis, and even firecrackers are common bait items, often advertised with “70–95% off” offers.Police have urged people to carefully verify links, websites, and payment requests before making purchases. They also warned against sharing sensitive details with callers or websites posing as banks or companies.“The festive rush is when cyber gangs are most active. Citizens must remain extra cautious,” a senior police official said.
