Between August 2023 and August 2025, 307 Asiatic lions in Gir died, but only 51 deaths were natural. The remaining 256 were classified as unnatural, according to official records shared by the state forest minister in response to a question from Botad MLA.
Despite crores spent on lion conservation, including hospitals, modern ambulances, vaccinations, and habitat improvement, disease remains the leading cause of unnatural deaths—60 lions died last year, and 81 have already died this year. Internal fights, open wells, and water bodies were also significant causes, with 20 lions falling into wells and 9 drowning.
While the government highlights rising lion numbers, officials admit that forest space remains inadequate and diseases are increasing. Over the past two years, 37.35 crore has been spent on measures like night patrolling, speed breakers, radio-collaring, and vaccination programs. Yet, unnatural deaths continue to rise, highlighting ongoing challenges in Gir’s conservation efforts.
