A portion of a balcony on the second floor of a four-storey building collapsed in Gomtipur on Friday morning, injuring an elderly woman and trapping nine others inside.
The incident occurred around 8:50 am at Sant Vinobabhave Nagar Chali. Debris from the falling balcony struck the woman, while the remaining residents were safely rescued by the fire brigade using ropes and ladders. Three fire tenders were deployed for the operation.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had earlier issued multiple notices declaring the building unsafe and urging residents to vacate, but the premises remained occupied. Officials said their swift response helped avert a major tragedy.
Over the past year, the city has reported more than 35 cases of slabs, balconies, and other structures collapsing, most of them during the monsoon.
