In response to the rising cases of sudden heart attacks in Gujarat, a PhD scholar at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat, has developed an innovative chip that can monitor heart activity continuously and transmit data to doctors in real time.
Priyank Prajapati, under the guidance of Dr. Anand Darji and Dr. Pinalkumar Engineer, created the ECG Artifact Reduction and Arrhythmia Detection Chip using 180-nanometer technology. The project, completed after 18 months of research, was supported by ₹15 lakh funding under the Centre’s Chip to Startup (C2S) program.
The chip underwent fabrication at the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL), Mohali, followed by testing at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Bengaluru. After successful trials, it was approved for use.
How it works: Much like a digital watch tracks health metrics, this chip records heart signals continuously and transmits the data through Bluetooth or other devices, enabling doctors to detect abnormalities early and begin treatment quickly.
This innovation also joins the list of 31 semiconductor chips developed in India so far, aligning with the government’s Make in India mission for indigenous technology development.
