Students of the BDes Furniture and Interior Design programme at the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, are showcasing sustainable and futuristic lighting concepts crafted from bamboo. The exhibition, open till September 8, reimagines bamboo not just as a traditional craft material but as a versatile medium for contemporary design.
Projects on display include Bamboo Blossom, a pendant lamp with petal-like forms by Debanjan Ghorai; Lumea, a coral-inspired floor lamp by Raksha Gopinath; Eesha, a jellyfish-inspired creation by Naveena Moorthy; and Paardarshi, a translucent table lamp by Ashray Sachan.
Other works include Whispering Wing by Sriya Reddy, which combines bamboo and cane with reflective elements; Shogun by Nitesh Patar, inspired by samurai armour; Valai by Kathir Senthil, which draws from South Indian Kolam motifs; and Bruta-Lit by Novajyoti Sarkar, blending Brutalist geometry with organic warmth.
Each design attempts to balance craft traditions with modern aesthetics while exploring bamboo’s potential as a sustainable material for the future of lighting.
