Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the commercial production of Maruti Suzuki’s first global electric vehicle (EV), the e-VITARA, at the company’s Hansalpur plant in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He also launched exports of the model to over 100 countries, including Japan and several European nations.
At the event, the PM also inaugurated localized production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant—a Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki joint venture—marking a major step toward India’s self-reliance in clean energy. With this, over 80% of battery value will now be manufactured domestically.
Maruti Suzuki had first unveiled the e-VITARA in January 2025 at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo. With this milestone, India becomes Suzuki’s global manufacturing hub for EVs, advancing the government’s vision of making the country a leader in green mobility and advanced manufacturing.Separately, the PM also dedicated railway projects worth ₹1,400 crore, including the doubling of the 65 km Mahesana-Palanpur line.
