According to Vastu Shastra, placing Lord Ganesha at the main entrance of a house is considered highly auspicious. Known as the remover of obstacles, Ganesha is believed to shield the home from negative energies and bring prosperity.
However, certain placement mistakes can reduce these benefits or even invite negative effects. If you are moving into a new home this Ganesh Chaturthi or planning to install an idol at your entrance, avoid these eight common errors:
- Placing in the Wrong Direction
Most auspicious: North, East, or North-East.
Avoid: South (believed to attract negativity). If your door faces South, ensure the idol faces inside the house.
West is also less favourable—consult a Vastu expert if needed.
- Ignoring the Idol’s Back
The idol’s back should face outward, as it is believed that poverty resides behind Ganesha.
If keeping two idols, place them back-to-back—not facing the house.
- Using a Broken or Damaged Idol
Never install a chipped or broken idol—it is considered inauspicious.
- Wrong Idol Posture
A sitting idol is ideal at the entrance, symbolising peace and stability.
Avoid standing idols (linked to instability) and reclining idols (meant for bedrooms, not entrances).
- Placing Near Toilets or Unclean Areas
Never position the idol near dustbins, toilets, or dirty spots, as it shows disrespect and attracts negative energy.
- Fixing on a Damaged Wall
Do not install the idol on a cracked, rough, or dirty wall.
If the wall isn’t suitable, place it above the main door frame instead.
- Keeping Too Many Idols
Vastu recommends only one idol at the entrance.
If two are used, place them on either side of the door, with their backs facing each other. Avoid clustering multiple idols.
- Wrong Trunk Direction
The trunk bending left is most auspicious, inviting happiness and prosperity.
The right-bent trunk (Siddhi Vinayak) requires strict rituals and is better suited for temples, not the main entrance.
