The Supreme Court on Friday declined a request to form a committee led by a retired Supreme Court judge to independently review Air India’s safety measures and maintenance procedures.
According to a media report, a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi asked the petitioner why he was specifically targeting Air India.
“Why just Air India? What about others?” they asked while rejecting the petition.That plea was filed in the wake of a recent crash of an Air India Boeing aircraft operating on the Ahmedabad – London route, which claimed 270 lives.The PIL, filed by Narendra Kumar Goswami and Laxman Prasad Goswami, sought an independent investigation led by a retired Supreme Court judge into Air India’s safety practices, maintenance procedures, and operational protocols.The petition also requested a thorough safety audit of Air India’s entire fleet by an international aviation safety agency accredited by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), focusing on the shortcomings highlighted in the 2024 ICAO audit report.Additionally, it called for a time-bound report from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on the Ahmedabad plane crash.
