The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has integrated chapters from the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita into first language textbooks for Classes 9 to 12. This update applies to textbooks in Gujarati, Hindi, English, and Urdu.
Earlier, the Gujarat government passed a resolution to introduce the Bhagavad Gita in the school curriculum across all levels—from primary to higher secondary. Following that directive, students began learning Gita chapters along with Sanskrit shlokas. While Gujarati textbooks for Classes 9 to 12 were updated last year with two new Gita chapters and put into use, the textbooks in other languages were not ready at the time. As a result, exam questions based on the Gita were not included for those languages.
Now, with updated textbooks released for all four languages, the board has also rolled out revised exam paper formats starting this academic year.
A circular has been issued to all District Education Officers (DEOs), directing schools to adopt the new textbooks and formats beginning in the 2025–26 academic session.
The GSHSEB stated that the revised exam formats were proposed by subject experts and approved during an academic committee meeting held on July 17. Monthly planning for syllabus coverage and implementation of the changes has already commenced.
