Ahmedabad University has opened a new Tinkerers’ Lab that is open 24×7 and fully managed by students. It gives engineering students hands-on experience with the latest tools and technologies to turn their ideas into working models—whether for class projects, startups, or national competitions.
The lab includes high-end equipment like 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics workstations, machine and hand tools, and precision measuring instruments. Various materials are also available so students can build and test prototypes anytime. Students aiming to turn their projects into real businesses can connect with VentureStudio, the university’s startup incubator.
This initiative is a joint effort between Ahmedabad University, the Maker Bhavan Foundation, AIA Engineering Ltd., and Arvind Composites.
“Real engineering happens when you try, fail, learn, and try again. This lab gives students the freedom to do exactly that,” said Piyush Shah, a founding member of Hitachi Hi-Rel and contributor to the Maker Bhavan Foundation.
The lab is located within the School of Engineering and Applied Science and complements other hands-on spaces like PRAYAS Shala and a Fabrication Shop. It also connects students with live projects and internships through industry tie-ups.
Prof. Sunil Kale, Dean of the School, said the lab is part of the university’s focus on practical, hands-on learning and creative thinking.
Damayanti Bhattacharya, CEO of the Maker Bhavan Foundation, highlighted the lab’s role in helping students move from being knowledge consumers to creators.
The lab will also work with LEAP (Learning Engineering by Activity through Projects), a program by IIT Madras Incubation Cell that brings workshops, faculty training, and project-based modules to enhance practical learning.
AIA Engineering is supporting the lab as part of its commitment to technical education. Arvind Composites built a unique lightweight mezzanine floor for the lab using advanced materials.
From this semester, all engineering students at Ahmedabad University can use the lab and participate in LEAP boot camps, interdisciplinary build-a-thons, and mentoring sessions focused on real-world problem-solving.
