In a worrying trend for technical education in Gujarat, 23 engineering colleges recorded single-digit admissions in the first round of the admission process this year. Of these, 12 colleges failed to attract even a single student, despite offering hundreds of seats.
According to a media report, the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC), 30,305 seats were allotted out of 56,722 available in degree engineering courses. However, only 18,068 students actually reported to colleges—just 59.62% of those allotted.
Students Avoid Poorly Equipped Colleges
The figures highlight a growing preference among students for established institutions with better facilities. Many newer colleges are struggling to attract students due to poor infrastructure, lack of qualified faculty, and remote locations.
Colleges with Lowest Turnout
Some of the most glaring examples include:
- Shree Pandit Nathulalji Vyas Technical Campus, Surendranagar: Of 2,160 available seats, only 11 were allotted—and none of the students reported.
- Vidhyadeep Institute of Engineering and Technology, Surat: Allotted 63 out of 1,223 seats, but only five students joined.
- Hansaba College of Engineering and Technology, Siddhpur: Allotted nine out of 745 seats; just two students reported.
Admission Trends
Only 29 colleges achieved a 100% reporting rate, where all allotted students joined. Here’s a broader picture:
- 25 colleges had more than 75% of allotted students join.
- 19 colleges saw a 50–75% reporting rate.
- 18 colleges had 25–50% of students report.
- 43 colleges had less than 25% of their allotted students turn up.
Officials Blame Oversupply and Poor Planning
Officials said, colleges are expanding seat capacity without considering actual demand or ensuring quality education. “Many of these colleges are in semi-urban or urban areas where demand is already met by better-established institutions. The lack of proper infrastructure, experienced faculty, and competitive learning environments pushes students to avoid them,”.
The second round of admissions will begin after the Gujarat board supplementary exam results are announced.
