The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has said that students who took Basic Mathematics in Class 10 can now choose to study regular Mathematics in Class 11, if they have the interest and ability.
This rule will apply for the 2025-26 school year.
CBSE started two levels of Math in Class 10 from 2019-20 — Basic Math for students who don’t want to study Math further, and Standard Math for those who do. Usually, Basic Math students continued with Applied Math, not regular Math in Class 11.
Because of COVID-19 challenges, CBSE allowed an exception, letting Basic Math students switch to regular Math in Class 11. This exception will continue next year.
SCHOOLS TO ASSESS STUDENT INESS
Schools must check and confirm that students are ready for this swith.
“The head of the institution/school should satisfy that the students have the aptitude and ability to pursue Mathematics (041) in class XI,” the CBSE notification says.
Parents and students are advised to note that once the subject is chosen and entered in the List of Candidates (LOC), it cannot be changed later. Schools are asked to share this update with their communities to avoid confusion.
This move aims to give students more flexibility, especially those who decide later that they want to pursue science, engineering, or other courses requiring higher-level maths.
