As more parents and students prefer English medium schools, Hindi and Gujarati medium schools are being left behind. In Ahmedabad, 68 Hindi and Gujarati medium schools did not get even one RTE student, while only one English medium school had no RTE admissions under the 25% quota.
After Right to Education (RTE) admissions ended, officials from the District Education Office (DEO) in the city said that out of 1,300 schools and 14,778 RTE seats, 69 schools in Ahmedabad didn’t admit any RTE students. These include 55 Hindi medium, 13 Gujarati medium, and 1 English medium school.
According to the DE, Rohit M Chaudhari,”There are 69 schools in Ahmedabad in which not a single student has taken admission. Most of these schools are Hindi medium followed by English and Gujarati medium,”
The trend is attributed to the choice of medium of instruction by parents. “Parents prefer to educate their children in English medium due to which admissions in Gujarati and Hindi medium schools are decreasing. Apart from this, there is a possibility that admission has not been obtained due to the rule that admission can only be obtained in the nearest school within 6 km of residence.” he added.
