Ahmedabad’s roads are getting fancier as more imported and luxury cars are seen in the city. The number of such cars has doubled in the past year, showing that the city is catching up with big metros like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru. More professionals, businessmen, and influencers are now choosing cars that cost over ₹1 crore.
Brands like Porsche, Land Rover, Maserati, Lamborghini, Ferrari and Rolls-Royce, once rare on city roads, are now seen more often. RTO data shows registrations of such luxury vehicles have doubled over the last five years, driven by a changing work culture, rising incomes, and the arrival of global companies in the city.
Imported car registrations in Ahmedabad have steadily increased over the past five years, according to data from the Subhash Bridge RTO. There were 128 in 2020, 133 in 2021, 108 in 2022, 173 in 2023, and 226 in 2024 — making a total of 768 cars from 2020 to 2024.
Nirav Bakshi, in-charge at Subhash Bridge RTO, said, “Cars made in India are taxed at around six per cent of the invoice value, while imported cars are taxed almost double-about 12 per cent. Earlier, cars costing Rs 40-50 lakh were mostly registered. But now we are seeing an increase in registrations of high-end foreign cars like Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini Urus, Maserati, Porsche and Land Rover, which cost Rs 1 crore or more.”
He added, “Even in imported cars, models like Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Macan, Cayenne, Taycan 45, Maserati Levante 350 and Land Rover-all priced above Rs 1 crore-are being registered more and more. Recently, we registered 86 Porsche, 46 Land Rover and Jaguar, five Maserati, five Lamborghini, two Ferrari and two Rolls-Royce cars.”
Pranav Shah from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) said, “Now, well-known Indian and international companies have come to Ahmedabad. The CEOs and COOs of these companies have very high salary packages. At the same time, the income of doctors, lawyers, real estate tycoons and influencers has also gone up. These people live according to their social image and buy expensive homes and cars as status symbols. That’s why you now see cars like Porsche, Land Rover, Defender, Lamborghini and Maserati on Ahmedabad’s roads.”
