India is carrying out one of its largest civil defence mock drills today, May 7, 2025, spanning 244 districts to assess emergency preparedness in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack and rising tensions with Pakistan. This is the first drill of such scale since 1971, reflecting the government’s firm stance on national security.
Key highlights of the drill:
Timings: Most drills are scheduled around 4 PM in major cities like Delhi and Mumbai, though timings vary by location.
Sirens and Blackouts:
Mumbai: Sirens will sound in 60 areas at 4 PM, followed by a 5-minute power blackout.
Delhi: Sirens will be heard at 55 points at 4 PM, with selective power cuts instead of a full blackout.
Ghaziabad: Sirens will be sounded at 10 AM and 8 PM.
Gurgaon: A voluntary blackout will take place from 7 PM to 8 PM.
Noida: A different format will be observed due to the lack of a civil defence unit.
Purpose and Public Advisory:
The nationwide exercise aims to test air raid warning systems, communication with the Indian Air Force, and blackout protocols to simulate wartime conditions. Blackouts are intended to hinder enemy aircraft targeting key installations.
Authorities advise citizens to remain calm, avoid spreading misinformation, and follow official instructions. Residents are also encouraged to keep basic emergency supplies on hand.
