Justice Aniruddh Mayee of the Gujarat High Court has stayed a notice issued by the Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) to one of its students suspending him from the hostel with immediate effect. The notice, issued on September 20, asked the student to vacate the hostel within 24 hours. The student then moved the HC, which, after a primary hearing, issued notice to the GNLU while posting the matter for further hearing on November 25.
As per the case details, GNLU student Gaurav Meena had initiated. an anti-ragging complaint with the UGC in September 2023. The “respondent” was asked to apologise to him. When the order was not complied with, Meena took up the matter on the UGC’s E-Samadhan portal. The UGC, on September 10, wrote to the GNLU Registrar to look into the matter.
The petitioner submitted that the Student Disciplinary Committee of the GNLU issued a notice to him to appear in person on September 13 with respect to alleged misconduct on July 5, 2024. Meena immediately responded that he had tests on September 13, 17 and 20.
He communicated to the committee that he had tried to meet the concerned authority after the test hours on September 13, but they refused to meet him. On September 20, he received a notice from the Registrar informing him of his suspension from the hostel. He then challenged the notice in the HC.
