Kalupur Railway Station is undergoing a major redevelopment project that will necessitate a three-year closure of a key 200-metre stretch between Sarangpur Circle and Kalupur Railway Stn.
The city police commissioner has issued a notification announcing the closure, effective from Wednesday, September 11, 2024, until September 10, 2027. The remaining side will be converted into a one-way lane for vehicles heading towards the station. To mitigate traffic congestion, three alternative routes have been proposed.
Alternative route
For vehicles heading from Sarangpur Circle to Kalupur Railway Station, diversion has been made through Sindhi Bazar and Panchkuva to reach the main gate of the railway station. Vehicles from Kalupur Railway station towards Sarangpur will use the one-way lane on their left.
Local businesses concerned
The road closure and redevelopment project have raised concerns among local businesses and workers. Mitesh Patel, President of Kapad Mahajan, expressed concerns about the impact on the Sindhi Bazar area, which houses around 5,000 clothing shops. He emphasised the lack of proper parking facilities and the potential negative impact on business due to traffic congestion and vehicle towing issues.
Imran Khan, President of Gujarat Mazdoor Sangh, highlighted the challenges faced by porters due to the redevelopment. He expressed uncertainty about their future work assignments and the need for more flexibility in job placements during the construction period. The old entry gate will remain open for passengers during the construction period.
