Amid the massive heatwave in Gujarat, the common people in the state have been grappling with skyrocketed electricity bills due to the installation of smart meters under the centre’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
After the people of Vadodara, complaints of higher electricity charges from smart meters have been reported in Ahmedabad.
Residents of eight societies in the New Naroda area of the city have strongly protested against the smart meters. Locals took to the roads and demanded the removal of smart meters and replacing them with the old meters.
They are also claiming that the electricity companies installed the smart meters without informing them. As per sources, the residents will visit Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) to report the issues.
Prepaid smart meters have become a rising issue statewide, sparking uproar and protests in areas of Vadodara, Surat and Ahmedabad.
