Incidents of domestic violence are increasing in the state, as per the recent numbers reported by the women’ helpline number in the state.
The ‘Abhayam 181’ women’s helpline in Gujarat received 415 calls in Anand district during February, out of which the highest number includes 165 calls of domestic violence.
Case breakdown
Mahila Abhayam team, working at the women’s police headquarters in Anand district, received a total of 415 calls in February.
Out of this 415 calls, 165 were of domestic violence, 81 of torture, 79 of general information, 16 related to extramarital affairs, 16 of mental illness, 13 of legal issues, 8 of custody issues, 5 of extortion, 5 of other relationship issues, 5 of mental stress, 4 of running away from home, 3 were of obscene demands on phones.
There were 2 calls for physical assault, 2 for financial/job-related issues, 1 for marriage issues, 1 for property issues, 1 regarding death threats, 1 for work-related problems, and 6 other calls.

The Mahila Abhayam team along with the women counselor, goes to the complainant’s place, listens to their problems and solves them by counseling.
Also, in the case of domestic violence between husband and wife, efforts are made to bring the married life back on track by persuading both parties.
If there is a serious problem, nearest police stations are contacted immediately and a case is filed against the perpetrator. However, in most cases, the problem is solved by persuasive communication with both the parties by the female counselor.
