The Indian Railways is planning significant upgrades to the greatest rail network in Asia, starting with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Express train, a semi-high-speed train that was constructed domestically. On the one side, it has chosen to introduce 75 Vande Bharat Express trains by the end of August 2023, and on the other, it has chosen 1,275 stations for Amrit Bharat Station Scheme rehabilitation. 87 stations that are currently open in the state of Gujarat are among the elected stations. The Western Railway (WR) zone-controlled New Bhuj Train Station is also included in the government’s development plan.
Reflection of the Rann of Kutch
The Indian Railways has decided to redevelop the Bhuj railway station as a state-of-the-art smart railway station, facilitated with the latest technologies. Upon its development, the railway station will be a reflection of the Rann of Kutch.
Construction cost
The construction work of the Bhuj railway station is underway at full pace and will be completed at an estimated cost of Rs 179.87 crore. To complete the task as soon as possible, the government has already awarded the Engineering Procurement and Construction mode (EPC) and it is expected that the renovation work is likely to be completed within two years.
Development so far
The utility mapping, site survey, and geotechnical research have already been completed, and the installation of the batching plant and the fabrication yard activities are underway. Additionally, the main building is being demolished.
What will the new station look like?
In an attempt to provide rail users and travellers with a glimpse of the upcoming station, the zonal authority has installed a miniature model of the new railway station near the entrance and exit of the current station. The design of the station has been developed as a smart station that is recognised as a green building. The newly developed station will provide an eco-friendly environment to the visitors.
Facilities at the new Bhuj station
The main building of the projected Bhuj station will spread across 970 sq metres. The new station will provide a wide waiting area, circulation, and concourse. According to the plan, the concourse area will cover around 3,240 sq metres. The new station will be equipped with Wi-Fi facilities to provide better services to visitors. Additionally, there will be 10 escalators and 13 lifts for passengers. Additional parking facilities will be provided to the visitors coming on four- and two-wheelers.
