The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced on Monday that Shafali Verma will captain India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming bilateral away T20 series against South Africa U19 and the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
The inaugural ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, which will be held in South Africa from January 14 to 29, will feature 16 teams. India is in Group D with South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and Scotland. The top three teams from each group advance to the Super Six round, in which teams are divided into two groups of six.
The top two teams from each group will then advance to the semi-finals, which will be held on January 27 at Potchefstroom’s JB Marks Oval. On January 29, the final will be held at the same location.
Meanwhile, India will have a five-match T20 International series against the hosts in South Africa.
Richa Ghosh, senior India player, was also named to the squad which is otherwise made up of players who are currently competing in a bilateral series against the New Zealand development squad.
Shweta Sehrawat, who has been leading India U19 against New Zealand in Mumbai, will assist Shafali. The prodigiously talented G Trisha has been one of the standout performers in recent U19 squad preparation events.
