Covid-19 cases in Gujarat surged to a new high on Tuesday, breaching the 17,000-mark for the first time since the pandemic outbreak in early 2020.
The state reported 17,119 Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, eclipsing the previous high of 14,605 reported on April 30, 2021, during the second wave of the pandemic, as per the state health department’s daily Covid-19 bulletin. The tally was 34% higher than Monday’s tally of 12,753.
Ahmedabad city reported 5,998 cases, the highest ever in a day, beating the previous high of 5,790 cases reported on April 25. Similarly, cases also jumped to new highs in Surat city (3,563), Vadodara city (1,539), and Rajkot city (1,336).
Surat rural and Gandhinagar city reported more than 400 cases each with 423 and 409 respectively, while Morbi and Valsad had 318 and 310 cases respectively. Jamnagar city, Mehsana, Navsari, and Bharuch recorded over 200 cases.
The pandemic’s death toll jumped to 10,074 with ten more people succumbing to the virus in the last 24 hours. This was the highest death toll in a day since May. Ahmedabad city and Surat rural accounted for three deaths each, and Surat city two deaths. Bhavnagar city and Valsad also reported one death.
As many as 7,883 patients recovered from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours taking the cumulative tally to over 8.66 lakh. The overall recovery rate is 90.61%. The active caseload jumped to 79,600, of whom 113 patients are on ventilator, while the rest are stable.
More than 3.17 lakh vaccines were administered in the state on Tuesday, taking the cumulative vaccination coverage to nearly 9.54 crore.
