Three cities from Gujarat figure among India’s cleanest cities under the Swachh Survekshan 2021, with Surat being ranked second.
Indore was awarded the title of India’s cleanest city under the Swachh Survekshan for the fifth consecutive year. The ranking is aimed at recognising the good work done in cleanliness by towns, cities, states, and union territories under various initiatives of the Swachh Bharat Mission. The annual survey saw the participation of 4,320 cities and received feedback from over 5 crore citizens, compared with 1.87 crore last year.
President Ram Nath Kovind felicitated the awardees of the cleanest cities at a ceremony at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on Saturday.
Surat bagged the second spot in the list in cities with more than 1 lakh population category. The city was also among nine cities certified as 5-star in terms of garbage-free cities.
Among other Gujarat cities, Vadodara was ranked eighth on the list of cleanest cities in the annual survey, while Ahmedabad was ranked tenth. Ahmedabad cantonment also won the title of India’s cleanest cantonment.
Varanasi was ranked the best Ganga town. Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh emerged as the fastest mover city in the more than one lakh population category. The city jumped 274 ranks from 361 in 2020 to 87th position this year.
Among states, Chhattisgarh emerged as the cleanest state for the third straight year in the category of more than 100 urban local bodies, while Jharkhand was ranked the cleanest state in the category of less than 100 urban local bodies.
