Ahmedabad: Casting a ballot was held for surveys in Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation and three regions alongside surveys in seats in Ahmedabad and Junagadh urban bodies. The counting of votes will be hung on Tuesday.Authorities said 53.14 percent of individuals decided in favor of the GMC races. Surveying was held for 44 seats in 11 wards.
Hiraba, mother of PM Narendra Modi, cast her vote in the morning, accompanied by her family members. Polling was also held for by-elections on two seats in Ahmedabad and one in Junagadh, along with Thara and Okha nagar palika and Bhanvad nagarpalika in Devbhumi Dwarka.
The BJP and Congress had fielded candidates on all seats in Gandhinagar, while AAP contested 40 seats in the Capital and was expected to put up a strong showing. BSP fielded 16 candidates and NCP 2. Eleven Independents are also in the fray in the GMC polls.
According to State Election Commission figures, of the total registered 2.81 lakh voters, only 1.44 lakh voted. These included 78,839 men and 65,772 women. Elections were due in April this year but were postponed twice. The response of voters for by-elections in Ahmedabad and Junagadh remained poor, with turnout being 21.95 and 45.71 per cent respectively.
The civic polls will be the first elections after the new Chief Minister took over and so assume significance.
