After a gap of 16 years, the Government of India has announced the schedule for the next population census, with the nationwide exercise set to take place from January 25 to February 28, 2027. However, the first phase will not cover five poll-bound states and certain snow-covered regions due to election-related administrative requirements and challenging weather conditions.
The census will be conducted in two phases, allowing citizens to submit their household details through an online self-enumeration facility before officials begin door-to-door data collection. The initiative is aimed at making the process more accessible and facilitating the collection of population-related information.
The government has designated midnight of March 1, 2027, as the reference date for the census. Accordingly, population figures will be determined based on the details recorded as of 00:00 hours on that date.
Census 2027: When Will the Population Count Begin?
The population enumeration exercise is scheduled to run from January 25 to February 28, 2027, across the country, except in the identified poll-bound states and snow-bound areas. During this period, census officials will visit households to collect information required for updating the country’s population records.
The exercise will help establish an updated demographic database, providing information on households and population patterns across different parts of India. March 1, 2027, at 00:00 hours, will serve as the common reference point for the enumeration.
Self-Enumeration Window Opens on January 10
For the first time in this census exercise, citizens will have the option of completing the self-enumeration process online before the commencement of the house-to-house survey.
The facility will remain available from January 10 to January 24, 2027. During this 15-day window, individuals can enter their household and personal details independently through the designated online platform, offering an alternative to providing all information during the physical enumeration process.
Which States and Regions Are Excluded from the January-February Schedule?
The initial census schedule will not cover five poll-bound states: Manipur, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Uttarakhand. Certain snow-bound areas of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir have also been kept outside the announced schedule.
The exclusions have been made considering the logistical difficulties associated with conducting a nationwide census during election preparations and severe winter conditions in high-altitude regions. These circumstances require separate administrative arrangements to ensure that the enumeration exercise can be carried out effectively.
The government has not announced separate dates for conducting the census in these excluded states and regions.
Why March 1, 2027, Is Important for Census 2027
The government has fixed 00:00 hours on March 1, 2027, as the official reference date for determining the country’s population. A reference date provides a uniform benchmark for recording population figures and ensures consistency in the information collected across different geographical regions.
The data gathered through Census 2027 will serve as an important foundation for policymaking and development planning. Updated population statistics will help authorities assess requirements related to public infrastructure, healthcare, education, welfare schemes and other essential services.
