Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians have appointed former star all-rounder Kieron Pollard as their head coach ahead of the 2027 season. The franchise announced the decision on Saturday, elevating Pollard from his previous role as batting coach to lead the team from the dugout.
The appointment follows the reported departure of former head coach Mahela Jayawardene, leaving the position vacant. Pollard, who has shared a long association with the franchise, will now take on the responsibility of guiding the team in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League.
A 16-year association with Mumbai Indians
Pollard’s connection with Mumbai Indians stretches back 16 years, during which he has become one of the franchise’s most recognisable figures. The team welcomed his elevation, describing his progression from a player to head coach as a significant milestone in his cricketing journey.
Franchise owner Nita Ambani also expressed happiness over the appointment, highlighting Pollard’s longstanding contribution to the team. He joined Mumbai Indians at the age of 22 and went on to become an integral part of the setup. During his playing career, Pollard played a key role in several memorable victories and title-winning campaigns for the franchise.
His move into the head coach’s position marks another chapter in a relationship built over more than a decade and a half, with his experience and familiarity with the team expected to shape his new role.
Pollard welcomes the new challenge
Reacting to his appointment, Pollard expressed pride at being entrusted with the responsibility of leading Mumbai Indians as head coach. He described the franchise as an important part of both his personal life and cricketing career.
Pollard also emphasised the special bond he shares with the team, his fellow players and its millions of supporters around the world. He said the association remains deeply meaningful to him and expressed eagerness to help Mumbai Indians achieve further success in the coming seasons.
