The newly constructed 4.3-kilometer, six-lane elevated highway stretch on Ahmedabad’s Sarkhej-Gandhinagar (SG) Highway, connecting Karnavati to Sanand Chowkdi, has been completed and is awaiting official inauguration, authorities confirmed.
The infrastructure project, under development for over two years, aims to significantly alleviate traffic congestion at key intersections and shorten transit times for thousands of daily commuters along the high-density corridor.
Technical Specifications and Infrastructure Features
According to official project details from the National Highways division, the elevated structure features six operational traffic lanes along with dedicated ramp infrastructure to ensure seamless connectivity:
- Access Infrastructure: The flyover integrates six vehicular ramps—three constructed for traffic moving from Sarkhej-Sanand Chowkdi toward the ISKCON intersection, and three serving vehicles traveling from ISKCON toward Sarkhej-Sanand.
- Safety and Equipment: Core civil works and key safety installations have been completed, including high-visibility thermoplastic pavement markings, noise-attenuating barriers, and overhead street lighting systems.
Highway engineers confirmed that main-deck structural work is finished and operational lighting has been activated, with final surface cleaning scheduled to wrap up within days.
Multi-Agency Directives and Lower-Road Maintenance
The project was subjected to a comprehensive multi-agency safety review by local civil authorities and traffic police. Following site inspections, the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner issued strict directives to highway contractors to complete all pending surface repairs, road filling, and service-lane maintenance underneath the elevated structure by October 31.
While the primary elevated corridor is structurally clear and ready to accommodate vehicular traffic immediately upon authorization, lower service-road restoration is being executed concurrently to prevent secondary bottlenecks.
State and central transport authorities are finalizing the official inauguration date, with the corridor expected to open to the public ahead of the upcoming festival season.
