An explosive half-century from Sanju Samson alongside a sensational late-overs blitz by Naman Dhir propelled India to a dramatic four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the opening T20 International at Hagley Oval, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Chasing a formidable target of 226 New Zealand’s highest T20I total on home soil India launched their innings with aggressive momentum. Samson led the top-order charge, smashing 67 runs off just 33 deliveries to keep the required run rate well within reach during the powerplay. However, his dismissal triggered a sudden middle-order wobble that put India under severe pressure.
The chase was revived through a crucial partnership between skipper Shreyas Iyer and Naman Dhir. Dhir delivered a match-winning cameo, remaining unbeaten on 42 off a blistering 15 balls with five boundaries and two sixes. His high-octane hitting in the death overs sealed India’s record run-chase with two balls to spare, finishing at 230/6.
Earlier, New Zealand posted 225/4 after being sent in to bat, anchored by Glenn Phillips’ unbeaten 82. Pacer Mayank Yadav provided a key breakthrough for India, but it was the visitors’ batting depth that ultimately proved decisive in completing the thrilling pursuit.
