On the auspicious occasion of Dussehra, Bahucharaji Mata at the famous Bahucharaji Shaktipeeth in Gujarat was adorned with the priceless Navlakha necklace, valued at over ₹300 crore. The occasion also witnessed a police guard of honour and a grand palanquin procession from the main temple to the Sami tree, following an age-old tradition dating back to the Gaekwad era.
Necklace gifted by Vadodara king in 1839
The priceless necklace was gifted to the goddess by Manajirao Gaekwad, the then ruler of Vadodara, in 1839 after he recovered from a hernia. The necklace was valued at ₹9 lakh at the time, but its estimated value has now risen to more than ₹300 crore. It is studded with green, blue and white sapphires, making it one of the most valuable offerings associated with Gujarat’s temples.
Necklace brought out only twice a year
The precious necklace and other valuable ornaments are kept in a secure strong room under strict security throughout the year. The Navlakha necklace is brought out only twice a year, on Dussehra and during leap years, to adorn the goddess. The process is carried out in the presence of three senior officials under tight security arrangements.
Temple rituals follow ancient traditions
The main seat of Mataji is located in the Bahucharaji temple, where worship is performed according to scriptural rituals by a family appointed during the Gaekwad era. Special prayers and religious ceremonies are organised at the temple on Dussehra.
Historic temple built in 1783
The fort-like temple, featuring four towers and three massive gates, was built by Manajirao Gaekwad in 1783. Another important shrine dedicated to Mataji is located in Shankhalpur village near Bahucharaji, which is believed to have a history spanning around 5,200 years and remains a major pilgrimage centre for devotees.
A special sight for devotees
The sight of Bahucharaji Mata adorned with the Navlakha necklace, the police guard of honour and the grand palanquin procession makes Dussehra a memorable occasion for thousands of devotees. The temple’s priceless ornaments and rich historical heritage add to its religious and cultural significance.
