The 4-km, six-lane bridge on SG Highway is expected to ease traffic for 1.5 lakh commuters daily
The 4-km-long, six-lane elevated corridor between ISKCON Crossroads and Sanand Circle on S.G. Highway in Ahmedabad is expected to open by Diwali, easing congestion on one of the city’s busiest roads. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which is executing the project, estimates that around 1.5 lakh commuters will benefit daily.
The elevated corridor will allow motorists travelling between Sanand and Gandhinagar to bypass traffic junctions near YMCA Club, Karnavati Club and Prahladnagar Circle, reducing travel time and easing congestion. Ramps have been constructed for motorists who need to exit towards these areas. The project was awarded at a tender cost of ₹385 crore, while the total expenditure is expected to exceed ₹530 crore, according to the NHAI.
Currently, commuters travelling from Sanand towards Gandhinagar frequently face traffic congestion near Prahladnagar Garden Circle and Karnavati Club. Once the corridor becomes operational, through traffic will be able to bypass these junctions without stopping at the intersections.
The project also includes pay-and-park facilities beneath the bridge, CCTV cameras and modern monitoring systems to strengthen security. Construction is progressing towards the Sanand Circle end as the project approaches its targeted opening.
Chharodi overbridge expected by February
Meanwhile, the Chharodi overbridge, being constructed at an estimated cost of ₹45 crore, is scheduled for completion by February. The 60-metre-wide structure will have eight lanes, with four lanes on each side, and is expected to benefit thousands of motorists daily.
