Surprise inspections launched after complaints of vendors refusing to issue bills during pre-Navratri events
Ahmedabad’s food stalls and eateries are under the scanner of the State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) department following complaints that vendors were refusing to issue bills during pre-Navratri events. The department has launched surprise inspections across the city, and businesses found violating GST provisions could face penalties, officials said. The complaints primarily concern eateries and temporary food stalls operating at pre-Navratri events across Ahmedabad.
With food counters near garba venues and busy public places witnessing a surge in customers ahead of the festival, SGST officials are checking whether businesses covered by GST rules are issuing invoices, maintaining proper records and meeting their tax obligations.“Several complaints have been received over the past few days about vendors not generating bills for purchases at pre-Navratri events. Following this, surprise inspections have been launched across the city. Vendors found violating applicable GST provisions may face heavy penalties,” a senior SGST official said.
The inspection drive covers seasonal businesses that experience a sharp rise in sales during the festive period. Officials are examining their business activities, turnover and tax liabilities to check compliance with applicable billing and registration requirements. The department has also urged consumers to insist on bills when purchasing food and other items from temporary stalls.
Customer complaints can help officials identify suspected violations and initiate further investigations.“Businesses liable to register under GST must comply with the law and maintain proper billing records. Temporary and seasonal vendors will also be examined wherever required, and violations will be dealt with under the applicable provisions,” another SGST official said.
The drive aims to identify vendors allegedly evading billing requirements and ensure that seasonal businesses covered by GST regulations comply with the law during the Navratri rush.
