The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has clarified that the Class 10 passing criteria will remain unchanged for the 2027 board examinations. Students will continue to need at least 33% marks in a subject, with theory and internal assessment marks combined.
The clarification comes after a recent CBSE circular raised confusion among students, parents and teachers over whether Class 10 students would need to score 33% separately in the theory paper and internal assessment.
CBSE has now confirmed that the existing 80:20 assessment pattern and passing criteria will continue. For subjects such as Mathematics, Science, Social Science, English and Hindi, the theory paper carries 80 marks, while internal assessment carries 20 marks.
For example, a student scoring 26 out of 80 in theory and seven out of 20 in internal assessment would have a total of 33 marks and would pass the subject. However, the rule is different for Class 12. Students must secure at least 33% marks separately in both theory and practical/internal assessment to pass a subject.
