Indian pilot Captain Smit Machhar, who was injured during an alleged attack inside the cockpit of Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv, is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The Indian Embassy has said that his condition is stable and that it is in contact with his family and Saudi authorities.
The incident took place on September 30 on a flight carrying 174 people. According to reports, an argument broke out between Captain Smit Machhar and the co-pilot inside the cockpit, following which the co-pilot allegedly attacked him with a knife.
Despite sustaining serious injuries, Captain Machhar reportedly managed to maintain control of the aircraft. The situation inside the cockpit led to concern among passengers and crew members, who then reached the cockpit.
Flight makes emergency landing in Saudi Arabia
Despite being injured, Captain Machhar reportedly opened the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter and help restrain the alleged attacker.
Two off-duty pilots travelling as passengers then took control of the aircraft. The flight subsequently made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
Authorities said the other passengers and crew members on board were safe.
Modi and Netanyahu praise pilot’s courage
Following the incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Captain Machhar for his actions during the emergency. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the pilot’s courage and his efforts to protect the passengers despite being injured.
Smit Machhar joined Flydubai in 2022
Captain Smit Machhar previously worked with SpiceJet, where he was associated for around 11 years. He joined Flydubai in 2022 and flies Boeing 737 aircraft.
Machhar also has experience in training and mentoring other pilots.
He remains under treatment at a hospital in Tabuk. The Indian Embassy has said that his condition is being monitored and that necessary assistance is being provided to his family. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
