A cockroach-like insect was allegedly found in sev-tomato sabzi served at the Samras Girls’ Hostel near Gujarat University on Tuesday, just two days after the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) inspected the hostel and imposed a Rs 25,000 penalty over food-safety concerns.Photographs circulated by students purportedly show the insect in the sabzi served on a steel mess tray. Students alleged that they spotted it during dinner and immediately informed the hostel authorities.
The latest incident has raised fresh concerns among students about the quality and hygiene of food served at the hostel. Students claimed they have repeatedly complained about food quality and sanitation, but the issues have continued. The allegation comes days after students protested over reportedly finding a worm and earwigs in food served at the hostel.
Following those complaints, an AMC Food Department team inspected the premises on September 28, collected three surveillance food samples and imposed a Rs 25,000 fine.Students had also demanded that the catering contractor be replaced and blacklisted, along with action against officials responsible for monitoring food quality.
The hostel management and catering contractor had not responded to the latest allegations at the time of publication. A response from the AMC was also awaited. The authenticity of the photographs and the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident could not be independently verified.
