The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has imposed a ₹25,000 fine on Samaras Girls’ Hostel in the Gujarat University area after centipedes and worms were reportedly found in food served to students. The incident triggered a protest at the government-run hostel, where students raised slogans and demanded strict action against the agency responsible for preparing and supplying meals.
Following the complaints, an AMC team inspected the hostel, collected three food samples for testing and issued a notice before imposing the fine.Students claimed they had repeatedly complained about the poor quality of food but alleged that no effective action was taken. They said the quality of meals continued to deteriorate and that the discovery of insects in the food prompted them to protest.
The students demanded that the existing food contractor be blacklisted and replaced. They alleged that complaints to the hostel warden and representations to the Social Welfare Department had failed to resolve the issue.Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also joined the protest and demanded action against those responsible. Protesters warned of a larger agitation if their concerns were not addressed.
Students had earlier raised concerns about difficulties during heavy rains, alleging that waterlogging around the hostel sometimes made it difficult to reach the dining area and have their meals.
