Bopal police have arrested 19-year-old Sunil Ganesh Parmar from Dungarpur, Rajasthan, in connection with the Shilaj hit-and-run case in which 29-year-old newlywed Nishi Darji died.
The accident took place late on September 11 on Shilaj Canal Road in Ahmedabad. Nishi and her husband, Hardik Darji, were returning home after attending a Garba class when a speeding two-wheeler allegedly hit Nishi’s vehicle near Madhav Adhav Complex. The impact was severe and Nishi was reportedly dragged for around 10 feet. The biker fled the spot, leaving the vehicle behind. The incident was captured on CCTV.
Accused traced through CCTV
During the investigation, police examined CCTV footage and questioned witnesses before identifying the rider as Sunil Parmar. Police said that after the accident, Parmar was taken to Sola Civil Hospital in a 108 ambulance for treatment. However, he allegedly left the hospital without completing treatment or informing doctors.
Bopal police formed teams to trace him and eventually located him in his hometown in Dungarpur. He was arrested on September 16 and further investigation is underway.
Police suspect bike was travelling at high speed
According to police, Parmar is originally from Dungarpur and has been working as a domestic worker in Ahmedabad’s Thaltej area for around three years. On the night of the accident, he allegedly took his friend’s bike after work to go out for a cigarette. His friend Jitendra Meena was reportedly riding behind him.
Police said the CCTV footage has been sent for forensic examination. Preliminary estimates suggest that the bike may have been travelling at around 80-100 kmph, though the exact speed will be established after the forensic report.
Husband makes emotional appeal for justice
After Nishi’s death, her husband, Hardik, shared an emotional video on social media, appealing for justice. Hardik, a choreographer who conducts Garba classes at Blooming Camp in Science City, had married Nishi, a Vastrapur resident, around two months ago.
On September 11, the couple was returning home after completing their Garba class when the accident occurred on DPS Canal Road. Nishi suffered serious head and other bodily injuries and later died.
